Weekend To Do List, January 3-5, 2020

Do: Sunrise Hike

When: Saturday, January 4, 7am-8:30am
Where: Seven Islands State Birding Park / 2809 Kelly Ln, Kodak

Join Ranger Stephanie on a sunrise hike on the Hickory Ridge Trail, and watch Mother Nature paint its morning masterpiece. This hike will be moderately strenuous as they will be gaining roughly 300 feet in elevation in about 0.6 miles, so please keep that in mind. They will hike up to the high point in elevation at Seven Islands, and catch the morning sunrise from the viewpoint there! Ranger Stephanie will discuss some of the birds currently found in the park and the trees along the trail. This will be an out and back hike where they will start and finish right at the bluebird barn. If you're a photographer bring your camera! Since Seven Islands doesn’t open until sunrise, this will allow participants the ability to come in a little earlier than normal, and hopefully catch a beautiful sunrise as a reward for the hike! Each participant MUST have a light source with them like a flashlight/headlamp or they won’t be allowed to participate due to safety reasons. Closed toe shoes, snacks, and water are also recommended. This hike will only be approximately 1.2 miles, but hopefully we will be blessed with a beautiful sunrise! Please meet at the Bluebird Barn by 7:00am.

If you have any questions regarding this hike, please contact Ranger Stephanie at [email protected] or by cell phone 715-630-6848

Eat & Drink: Raw Food with Winter Root Veggies

When: Saturday, January 4, 12:30pm-3pm
Where: ET Permaculture Research Institute / 201 Ogle Ave, Knoxville

Come learn how to use winter root vegetables with vegan staples like nutritional yeast and cashews to create delicious and satisfying raw food dishes. Together we will learn how to create an antioxidant rich beet salad, an easy sweet potato pasta dish with cheesy sprinkle, and a smooth and creamy chocolate mousse using the incredibly healthy avocado. You will be amazed at how delicious and nutritious these dishes will be when we use heart healthy veggies, nuts, and fruits. The best part is that we will not ruin their nutrients with high-temperature cooking. Note: Students should bring their own chopping knife and are encouraged to bring their preferred electronic devices for viewing recipes. Also, this class must have a minimum of 4 participants, so please bring a friend!

Menu: Participants will be enjoying this as a full meal tasting!
+ Beet and Watercress Salad with Sweet Miso Dressing
+ Sweet potato noodles with almond miso sauce with Cheesy sprinkle & + Chocolate mousse with raspberries

Watch & Listen: Science in Motion (Exhibition)

When: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 4pm-7pm
Where: McClung Museum of Natural History / 1327 Circle Park Dr, Knoxville

See it before it's gone! Ending January 5th!

This exhibition offers a rich view of the scientific studies done by three groundbreaking photographers––Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton, and Berenice Abbott. They began their photographic careers in different manners: Muybridge as an experimenter in early photographic processes, Edgerton as a scientist, and Abbott as an artist. In the photos displayed here, Muybridge and Edgerton captured movement, while Abbott illustrated scientific principles with her images.

The medium’s pioneers were inventors, scientists, and mathematicians whose experiments dramatically affected the art form and forged a reciprocal relationship between art and science that continues to this day.

This exhibition has been loaned through the Bank of America Art in Our Communities® program.
